Description

The Superbright LED Tabletop Light Box turns any table you already have into a light play station. It is a 24.5 x 24.25 in tabletop light box, 6 in high, with an evenly lit top for preschool classrooms, daycare centers, libraries and playrooms. There are no legs and nothing to assemble: set it on a table, plug it in and switch it on. It is made in the US by Whitney Brothers, model WB0717, and the manufacturer lists it as one of its best sellers.

How This Tabletop Light Box Works

An LED lighting system inside the wooden frame lights the translucent top from below. Children place color tiles, picture cards or leaves on the surface, and the light shows color, outline and detail. According to Whitney Brothers, the LEDs give brighter and more evenly spread light, use less electricity and produce less heat. The system runs on a low current with a 12-volt output, and the cord has its own on/off switch. The light box is UL Listed in the USA and Canada.

The frame is birch plywood with a non-toxic natural UV finish, which the manufacturer says will not yellow and stands up to heavy classroom use. The light box is GREENGUARD Gold certified, a certification for low chemical emissions that many schools look for in classroom furniture. Because the grain is natural wood, no two light boxes look exactly the same.

Tabletop Light Box or Light Table?

A light box for kids makes sense when floor space is tight or when the light station needs to move. It sits on a table you already own, and the height of that table decides who can use it. On a low children's table it suits toddlers. On a standard classroom table it suits preschoolers on chairs. After the session it comes off the table, and the table goes back to snack time or art.

If you want a permanent station with its own legs, the Superbright LED Light Table has a top of almost the same size and adjusts from 24 in down to 18 in. Our light tables for kids collection compares all five Whitney Brothers models side by side.

Where It Works Best

  • Preschool and pre-K classrooms. A light station that joins the science, block or early literacy center when needed.
  • Daycare and toddler rooms. On a low table, at the right height for the youngest children.
  • Classrooms that share equipment. At 27 lb, one adult can carry it to the next room.
  • Libraries and museums. A drop-in activity on an existing table in a children's area.
  • Sensory rooms and therapy spaces. A hands-on station that can be cleared away when the room needs a calmer setup.
  • Pediatric and dental waiting rooms. A quiet, screen-free activity on a waiting-room table.
  • Homes and homeschool spaces. On the kitchen or craft table, stored flat when not in use.

A light box pairs well with wall play. In a classroom or a waiting room, set it near a wall of sensory wall panels, so children can move between the table and the wall in the same corner. Our guide to what should be in a sensory room covers planning a space by zones.

What to Use on the Light Box

Light play needs very little. Translucent color tiles and shapes work for sorting and color mixing. Magnetic tiles and see-through blocks let children build with light. X-ray style picture cards, leaves and shells show detail from inside. Paper laid over the top makes tracing letters and pictures easier. For sand or water, use a shallow tray rather than the bare surface. Many teachers rotate a small set of materials each week so the same tabletop light box keeps offering something new.

Setup

  1. Unpack the light box. It ships fully assembled.
  2. Place it on a flat, stable table that is the right height for the children using it.
  3. Plug it into a nearby outlet and run the cord along the table edge and wall, away from walkways.
  4. Use the switch on the cord to turn it on, and check that the surface lights evenly before the first session.

Safety and Care

This tabletop light box is for indoor use with adult supervision. An adult should place it, check the cord and switch it off after use. Make sure the table under it is stable and that the light box sits fully on the tabletop, not hanging over the edge.

For cleaning, wipe the surface and frame with a soft cloth and a little mild detergent, then dry it right away. Avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia, silicone sprays and standing water. Keep liquids in trays rather than directly on the lit top.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Superbright LED Tabletop Light Box

Does it need assembly?

No. It ships fully assembled. Place it on a table, plug it in and use the switch on the cord.

What kind of table should it go on?

Any flat, stable table at least 24.5 x 24.25 in, so the light box sits fully on the top. Choose the table height to suit the children: a low table for toddlers, a standard classroom table for preschoolers.

Does the surface get hot?

Whitney Brothers states that the LED system produces less heat and runs on a low current with a 12-volt output. It is UL Listed in the USA and Canada. As with any electrical product, use it with adult supervision.

Does it come with light play materials?

No. The light box is sold on its own. Whitney Brothers offers Color Wheel circles, squares and triangles in sets of six, sold separately. Any translucent tiles or shapes also work.

What warranty does it have?

The wooden frame is covered by the Whitney Brothers lifetime limited warranty for indoor educational and institutional use. Electrical components carry a separate limited warranty. If you plan to use it at home, contact us before ordering and we will confirm the coverage.
