Description

The Superbright LED Large Light Table gives a small group of children one shared, evenly lit surface to work on. At 43 x 23 in, this large light table is about 70 percent longer than the standard Superbright table, so several preschoolers can sort, build and trace side by side without crowding. The height is adjustable, and the top is shatterproof acrylic over an LED lighting system. It is made in the US by Whitney Brothers, model WB0742, and BumbleBeeSmart carries it as an authorized Whitney Brothers dealer.

How This Large Light Table Works

LEDs inside the birch frame light the acrylic top from below. Children lay translucent tiles, picture cards or natural objects on the surface, and the light shows color, outline and detail. According to Whitney Brothers, the LED system gives brighter and more evenly spread light, uses less electricity and produces less heat. It runs on a low current, the cord has an on/off switch, and the table is UL Listed in the USA and Canada.

The frame is birch plywood with a non-toxic natural UV finish. The table is GREENGUARD Gold certified, a certification for low chemical emissions that many schools look for in classroom furniture. At 72 lb, it is a stable, permanent station rather than a piece to move every day.

Is a Large Light Table Right for Your Room?

Choose the large table when light play is a group activity. A long top lets children work along both sides and share materials in the middle, which suits a learning center where three or four children rotate in at once. The trade-off is space: the table needs a 43 in stretch of floor plus room for children on each side.

For one or two children, the Superbright LED Light Table has a 25.5 x 24.5 in top. If floor space is tight, the Superbright LED Tabletop Light Box sits on a table you already have. Our light tables for kids collection compares all five Whitney Brothers models, including the 47 in Whitney Plus Radiant LED Light Table with lit side panels.

Where It Works Best

  • Preschool and pre-K learning centers. A shared light station in the science, block or art area.
  • Kindergarten and early elementary. Small-group work on letters, numbers and patterns with traced or overlaid materials.
  • Daycare centers. Room for a teacher to sit at the table with several children.
  • Montessori and Reggio Emilia-inspired programs. Open-ended exploration of color, transparency and shadow by a group.
  • Sensory rooms and special education classrooms. A group station that a teacher can run from one side.
  • Children's museums and libraries. A drop-in activity where families can play together.

In a classroom, a large light table often anchors one zone of the room. Placed across from a wall of sensory wall panels, it gives children a table activity and a wall activity in the same corner. Our guide to what should be in a sensory room covers planning a space by zones.

Group Activities on the Light Table

A bigger surface changes how children play. Two can build a shared structure from see-through blocks or magnetic tiles while a third sorts colors at the other end. A teacher can lay out X-ray style picture cards along the length and ask the group to find matching pairs. Overlapping color shapes from both sides shows how colors mix. The Whitney Brothers Sand Box for Light Tables at one end and tracing paper at the other let two activities run at once. Many teachers rotate a small set of materials each week so the same large light table keeps offering something new.

Setup

  1. Unpack the table. It ships mostly assembled, so finish the remaining steps with hand tools as shown in the Whitney Brothers assembly guide. Two adults make this easier.
  2. Set the height for your group before children use it, and check that every leg is secure.
  3. Place the table near an outlet with space for children on both long sides. Run the cord along the wall, away from walkways.
  4. Use the switch on the cord to turn it on, and check that the surface lights evenly before the first session.

Safety and Care

This large light table is for indoor use with adult supervision. An adult should set it up, check the cord and switch it off after use. The acrylic top is a work surface only. It is not for climbing, sitting, standing or storing heavy items. Hardware can loosen with daily classroom use, so check it regularly and tighten fasteners when needed.

For cleaning, wipe the surface and frame with a soft cloth and a little mild dish detergent in water, then dry it right away. Avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia, silicone sprays and standing water. Keep sand and liquids in trays rather than directly on the lit top.
