Description

Sailboat Peg Maze Board for Preschool and Therapy

A sailboat-shaped peg maze with a fixed peg, 45×45cm (18×18"). The track mixes curves with straight runs and tighter corners, so the child has to change speed and direction rather than following one continuous sweep.

That makes it the natural step after an open shape - still approachable, but no longer effortless. Use it flat on a table or mount it on a wall to keep the floor clear.

Part of the peg maze board range. For wall-mounted panels with more elements, see our large busy boards.

Where it sits in the range

The four boards form a progression. Each uses the same movement - guide the peg along a groove - under increasing demand.

Difficulty progression across the peg maze range
Board Track Level
Butterfly Open shape, wide curves, symmetrical Entry
Sailboat Mixed curves, straights and tighter corners Entry to middle
Square Spiral Continuous spiral, repeated right-angle turns Middle
Geometry Multiple intersecting paths, route choice Most demanding

Children who breeze through the butterfly board are usually ready for this one. If the corners cause frustration rather than concentration, step back to the butterfly for a while - a task that is too hard gets abandoned, and there is no rush.

What the child actually does

Guide the peg from one end of the track to the other. There are no instructions, no scoring and no wrong answer.

The straights allow a steady pull; the corners require the child to slow down, reposition the hand and change direction. That alternation between sustained movement and controlled adjustment is what makes the sailboat track more demanding than an open curve, and it is the same hand control used for early writing, doing up buttons and using cutlery.

For more ways to build this kind of hand control, see our guide to fine motor skill activities for preschoolers.

Most children work it one-handed. Some steady the board with the other hand, which is a useful habit in itself.

What age it suits

Typically from around three or four, though hand control matters more than age. A child who follows the butterfly track deliberately - rather than sweeping the peg back and forth - will usually manage the sailboat.

Older children who find it straightforward are ready for the square spiral.

Where it is used

  • Preschools and nurseries - table activity or wall station in a quiet corner
  • Paediatric occupational therapy - fixed setup that stays the same between sessions
  • Special education and sensory rooms - see our sensory wall panels for autism
  • Waiting rooms and clinics - quiet, screen-free, nothing to lose. See our guide to sensory walls in dental clinics
  • Home playrooms - wall-mounted keeps the floor clear

Build and safety

  • Solid natural wood, hand-sanded, rounded edges throughout
  • Fixed peg - securely attached, no loose parts and no choking hazard
  • Non-toxic water-based finishes
  • Wipe-clean surface suited to daily use in shared settings
  • Wall mounting hardware included; also works flat on a table
  • Made to order by hand - colours and track can be adjusted

For mounting height guidance, including seated and wheelchair use, see our notes on inclusive placement for all abilities.

A fair expectation. A peg maze gives a child a defined, repeatable hand movement to practise. It is an activity product, not a therapeutic device, and it does not replace assessment or therapy. Where a child has specific developmental needs, an occupational therapist is the right person to say which activities suit them and how to use them.

Custom designs

Every setting is different. We can change size, track layout, colour and finish, or build a graded set - butterfly, sailboat, spiral and geometry in matching colours - for a classroom or therapy room. The same applies across our sensory wall panel range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Butterfly or sailboat - which first?

Butterfly first for younger children or a first board: the curves are wide and the symmetrical shape allows two-handed use. Move to the sailboat once the child follows the track deliberately rather than sweeping the peg back and forth. If you are buying for a nursery or therapy room rather than one child, having both covers a wider range without new equipment.

What age is it for?

Typically from around three or four, but hand control matters more than age. The useful test is whether the child already follows a simpler track on purpose. If they do, the sailboat corners will be a challenge rather than a frustration. If they do not yet, start with the butterfly.

Is it safe for a nursery or waiting room?

The peg is fixed and does not detach, so there are no small parts and nothing to lose. Edges are rounded, the wood is hand-sanded, and the finish is non-toxic and water-based. In shared settings, mounting it on the wall keeps it off the floor and makes wiping down between users straightforward. As with any equipment used by young children, supervision remains the setting's responsibility.

Wall-mounted or on a table?

Both work, and mounting hardware is included either way. On a wall the child works at a vertical surface, which engages the shoulder and wrist differently and keeps the floor clear - useful in a small room. On a table it can be moved between children or used sitting down. Many settings start with it flat and mount it once they know where it gets used most.

Can we order a set at different difficulty levels?

Yes. Because every board is made to order by hand, we can supply a graded set - butterfly, sailboat, spiral and geometry - in matching colours and sizes for a classroom or therapy room. We can also adjust track complexity, groove width and finish. Send us what you need and we will quote it.

Peg maze boards are activity products, not therapeutic devices. Nothing on this page is medical or clinical advice - where a child has specific developmental needs, decisions about suitable activities should be made with a qualified professional who knows them.

Is it safe and sturdy enough for a preschool classroom?
